We present smart and safe sensor solutions at leading American trade fairs

The trade fair “Smart Production Solutions” (SPS), based on the event of the same name in Nuremberg, is opening its doors for the first time in Atlanta. From September 16th to 18th, the focus will be on electric drive systems, machines and sensors as part of intelligent and digital automation products and services. At booth 949 we will, together with our US partner Encoder Products Company (EPC), present pioneering sensor solutions for the rotary encoder and inclination sensor markets. We will also be present at RoboBusiness (booth 700) in Santa Clara from October 15th to 16th to show innovative solutions for industrial automation and robotics.

We invite you to see the ring encoder for yourself, one of its many highlights. This functionally safe rotary encoder (SIL2/PLd) has a wide range of applications. As the name suggests, it can be used as a hollow shaft encoder with a free inner diameter of up to 150 mm, allowing it to be placed on correspondingly large drive shafts. It can also be used as an encoder in slip ring assemblies where the inner diameter is used for cable routing or contact body placement.

What sets it apart is its two independent interfaces: a safety interface and a particularly fast standard interface. Safe data is supplied to the safety PLC via PROFIsafe over PROFINET, Safety over EtherCAT or CANopen Safety, while a fast motor feedback system is operated via the SSI or BiSS-C interface. This unique, compact design saves space and implementation costs.

The ring encoder is based on an inductive measurement principle and comprises a rotor and stator, which can be connected via a plug or cable. It can be used on an electronic circuit board or in a robust aluminium or stainless steel housing with an outer diameter of up to 220 mm, offering a resolution of up to 22 bits. Thanks to its high resistance to shock and vibration, the rotary encoder is ideal for use in harsh operating conditions. With protection classes up to IP69K and positional accuracy of up to 17 bits, the ring encoder is ideal for precise position and speed detection in many industrial applications.

Another new product is the NBN45-G/S3 dynamic inclination sensor. This three-axis MEMS-based sensor is equipped with an additional gyroscope which, using the implemented Kalman filter algorithm, filters out interference accelerations and outputs a precise, functionally safe inclination angle via CANopen Safety or SAE J1939. The SIL2/PLd-certified, highly compact sensor can be ideally adapted to the respective application thanks to adjustable filter parameters. Additionally, the rotation rate and acceleration can be output for three axes.

Alongside the above features, we are renowned for our highly compact functional safety encoders. These include SIL2/PLd-certified multiturn encoders with a diameter of only 42 mm and various safety interfaces, or SIL3/PLe-certified multiturn encoders with a diameter of only 42 mm and various safety interfaces. Another example is a fully redundant singleturn encoder with a CANopen Safety interface. Two independent SIL2 systems can be housed in a unit measuring less than 35 mm in diameter and length.

Our extensive range of safety sensors, which feature all standard industrial interfaces, combines high reliability with cost-effectiveness. Thanks to their special mechanical and electronic properties, they offer significant advantages for safety-related applications in the industrial sector.
