SAFE SENSOR SOLUTIONS FOR WIND TURBINES
RELIABILITY AND PERFORMANCE FOR RENEWABLE ENERGY
Wind energy has been used to generate electricity for over 20 years, with the sector enjoying a long and successful history. The future prospects for this industry remain excellent, with ongoing technical developments increasing efficiency and operational safety.
As a result, the demands on sensor technology, such as encoders, have also increased. TWK-ELEKTRONIK has been involved in this development from the very beginning. TWK supplied the absolute encoder for Germany's first large wind turbine, the Growian, and has since become a key supplier to prominent companies in the wind energy sector.

To reduce the probability of an unrecognized sensor error, plausibility checks can be performed either in the sensor or in the system control unit. This enables the use of sensors in safety devices. TWK offers a range of sensors certified in accordance with DIN EIN 13849 (PLd) or IEC 61508 (SIL2) if the plausibility check is to be carried out within the sensor. Redundant sensors are typically used if the user prefers to delegate this task to the control system.
TWK has suitable sensors in its program for use in potentially explosive atmospheres. To ensure safety, sensor heating must remain below the ignition temperature. Therefore, our ATEX (ATmosphères EXplosibles) sensors are certified in accordance with DIN EN IEC 60079 and designed to prevent the ignition temperature from being exceeded, even in the event of a short circuit. Safety in explosion protection is increased by a combination of functional safety and ATEX.
